Krakow’s Old Town Square

The seconds ticked by until the massive tower clock of St. Mary’s Basilica in Krakow’s Old Town Square (the Rynek Glowny) struck twelve. After the requisite number of chimes, a bugler appeared in the tower window. For ten seconds he blew his best before abruptly stopping. Legend has it that his predecessor in the 14th century was warning Krakow of an approaching enemy, when an arrow slammed into his neck. The bugler waves and disappears before repeating his performance in another direction. Twelve local firemen on twenty-four hour shifts perform this civic duty.

Seville, Spain and the other Christopher Columbus Tomb

You may remember a few months ago, our travel column covered an island in the Caribbean – the Dominican Republic – for a great winter getaway; where they claim to hold the remains of the famous Christopher Columbus. Since this May is the 506th anniversary of his death, I thought I’d present my travels to the other location that claims to have his remains interred – Seville, Spain.
