New Programs at Clarke

Clarke University has received a $2,000 grant from the American Institute of Mathematics to help a planning team from Clarke, Loras College, Holy Family Catholic Schools, and Dubuque Community School District create a Dubuque Math Teachers’ Circle.

Dubuque One of 30 Honored as a “Pacesetter” in Early Reading Work

Dubuque is one of just 30 communities across the nation to be honored with a 2014 “Pacesetter” award by the national Campaign. Dubuque was cited for making “measurable progress” on student attendance outcomes. The Dubuque Campaign saw a 71% reduction in chronic absenteeism in a pilot program at one Title 1 school, and while this impacted just one school, the Dubuque Community School District is implementing best-practices district-wide.

Harvest of Blessings Grant Announcement

Through the generosity of many private contributions this past Thanksgiving season, the Archdiocese of Dubuque is happy to announce funding for 54 parish and Catholic school-based projects ranging from food bank programs to service trips and outreach programs for families in need. The new approach to a longstanding program has been a positive move towards building bridges between those in need and supportive communities, specifically local parishes. A total of $24,550 was raised through private donations and will be redistributed as matching grants of up to $500 per parish or Catholic school for projects accomplishing the program's main goals of supporting programs that address poverty reduction, create systemic change, and encourage relationships among those in need and supportive communities.

St. Mark Youth Enrichment Awarded Funding

St. Mark Youth Enrichment recently received a three-year, $220,500 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant from the Dept. of Education. Funds will help to double the number of youth who will engage in hands-on learning activities that advance academic skills while building meaningful relationships that lead to lifelong success.

Loras College Awarded $35,000

Loras College has been awarded a $35,000 grant from the Woodward Foundation. The grant funds will be used by the college to establish an endowed Woodward Foundation Scholarship for Media Studies. This is the first Loras College scholarship specifically designated to media studies students; Woodward Foundation scholars will be selected based upon financial need, academic promise, and in accordance with College financial aid policies and procedures.

Main Street Iowa and the Iowa Economic Development Authority announced a new program to help business development efforts in Iowa’s Main Street districts. The Open 4 Business competition is a chance for a business owner/entrepreneur to grow her/his business idea in a local Main Street district. A group of Dubuque business leaders will evaluate business ideas, Shark Tank / Main Street style!
